Roma - Seat Pagine Gialle has announced the availability of its mobile PagineGialleVisual services
I’m happy to introduce a new book written by my friend and colleague Stefano Sanna.
“Java Micro Edition - Sviluppare applicazioni network-oriented per telefoni cellulari e PDA” (http://www.gerdavax.it/jmebook) is focused on development of network-oriented applications using Java Micro Edition technology (MID profile) on mobile phones and small computers.
The author of this book is Stefano Sanna, one of the most known italian experts of Java ME technology. He began developing Java on mobile devices in 1999; he presented several seminaries on Java technology and he is the author of more than 50 technical articles. Feature writer of several journal, he actively supports italian Java communities. He has been software engineer at CRS4 (Cagliari) for seven years, working in Network Distributed Applications area. In 2006 he joined us in beeweeb, where he designs and develops multimedia applications on Java ME and Symbian OS.
In the book abstract Stefano has written: “the goal of this book is to help the reader to study this [Java ME] tecnology using pratical examples running on commercial handsets”. I can confirm that the goal has been reached, the book goes straightforward to core aspects, without turning around with useless prehambles.
The book is well structured and full of examples. It starts with a detailed description of the Java ME Platform in general, Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP), development tools. Main topics cover:
UI, I/O, multithreading and storage, XML and Web Services, Networking, Messaging, Bluetooth, Security. The last chapter provides an overview of other API outside the network programming domain.
Who attended Stefano’s presentation knows that his speeches are always a mix of accurate technical concepts and fair humor. “Gerdavax” (Stefano’s
nickname) put the same mix in the book. Can’t stop smiling when reading
in the List class example that known languages are “Italian, Sardo, French, English, German”!
A developer who wants to make first move on programming with JME will find in the first four chapters of the book a clear description of how the platform works, of all development tools and all API to work with UI. All topics are discussed with simpleness and accuracy.
While those chapters are more introductory, fifth chapter concerns about important topics such as connections, multithreading and storage, and the author does this with comprehensive and useful examples such as: “an advanced model of task running”, “manage of a simple RFID reader”, “how access to a GPS Bluetooth (without JSR 82)”, “management of a persinstent Hashtable”.
Experienced developers, after reading next chapter number about XML and Web Service, will find in the chapters 7,8,9 and 10 a detailed description of the connections using TCP sockets and UDP datagrams, access to external devices, messaging and security. Most interesting examples are: “how to implement a GPS localizer”, “make a Device Browser using bluetooth”, “remote controller of a PC”.
Although focused on the network-programming, unfortunately there is just a hint at SIP and multimedia applications, two hot domains that would deserve two ad hoc chapters.
To conclude, I recommend this book to both beginners than want to find a concise introductory guide and experienced developers focused on
network-centric projects that are looking a deep and well documented techniques. I also suggest it to all professionals that are intrigued of the developing applications for mobile handsets.

From November 2007, also Auditorium Parco della Musica (a famous Roman music complex) website can be accessed by mobile phone: ahead of other cultural institutions, and of most businesses and public administrations, Auditorium in collaboration with beeweeb technologies has created a “mobile” version of its auditorium.com website.
With its new “mobile ” service, the Rome Auditorium becomes one of the first players to enter the Mobile Internet arena. After focusing on its successful website - auditorium.com receives more visits than any other cultural institution site in Italy - Musica per Roma Foundation has decided to expand its services by giving visitors the chance to keep up to date wherever they happen to be. All you have to do is connect to the Internet via your mobile phone, go to m.auditorium.com, download and listen to podcasts, view the programme of events and call the ticket office automatically by clicking on the number shown.
The Auditorium’s new mobile site has been designed by beeweeb technologies, an Italian company specialized in the design and development of mobile solutions. beeweeb began working with Musica per Roma (the Foundation that manages Auditorium complex) in 2004, and is responsible for designing and managing the website. The platform used for the Auditorium’s new “mobile” site has been developed by beeweeb with the aim of facilitating the construction of sites for all businesses and public bodies interested in developing mobile services. Called “Mobile Web Toolkit”, the platform makes it possible to create the mobile version of a website very quickly because it can handle the content management systems already used by the website, automatically adapting webpages to the format of hundreds of different mobile devices and providing a publishing tool for the m-site.
